Laminate flooring bubbling is a frustrating issue, and it’s usually a sign that something has gone wrong with either moisture levels or installation. At Frank’s, we’ve seen this problem a fair few times, so let’s break down why it happens and what you can do about it.
One of the main culprits behind bubbling is excess moisture getting into your laminate boards. Whether it’s from a spill you forgot to mop up, a hidden leak, or too much water during cleaning, once water penetrates the core of your laminate, it expands, causing those unsightly bubbles. Even the humidity in the air can play a role, especially in kitchens and bathrooms where moisture levels fluctuate.
If the floor hasn’t been installed with enough room to expand, the pressure can cause the boards to push against each other, leading to raised edges or bubbling. Lack of an expansion gap can also cause the laminate to lift in other places like doorways or corners.
Using a soaking wet mop or a steam cleaner on laminate flooring is a big no-no. The excess moisture can break through the protective layer and damage the underlying wood. Always use a slightly damp mop and make sure any spills are dried up quickly.
The good news is, this issue is preventable! To avoid bubbling in the first place, here are some handy tips:
If you’ve already got bubbling, minor bubbles can sometimes be repaired by carefully releasing the air from under the surface. However, larger bubbles or more widespread damage will likely need the affected boards replaced. Once you’ve tackled the source of the moisture, you can remove and replace the damaged planks to restore your floor to its former glory.
