At Frank’s, we understand the difficulty of trying to design your dream home when there are little ones causing accidents to the carpet or worse. There are several things to consider to help ensure you get the best out of your home investments for as long as possible, especially with the sprogs running riot!

It goes without saying that carpet is an investment for any home and, ideally, you want it to last you for years to come.

You might be thinking “How do I keep carpet nice with my kids dragging mud, food, and paint everywhere?”. Sometimes simply hoovering doesn’t quite cut it as part of the cleaning routine but don’t worry, we have some Frank’s Top Tips going spare just for you!

Treat stains straight away on carpets

The quicker you find stains the better! After all, the longer stains are left, the more time they have to soak into the fibres of your carpet. As a result of this, they will then become more stubborn to remove when the time comes.

Thankfully, the majority of stains can be removed with a wet cloth and warm water. However, ones that have had more time to penetrate your flooring will require the use of a stain removal chemical product or a homemade stain remover if you prefer.

At Frank’s, we recommend dabbing all stains rather than vigorously scrubbing because this can cause the twists of your carpet to unravel.

Apply ice to stain substances

Kids love play-dough and putty but carpets certainly don’t! These substances can be extremely difficult to remove from carpet once embedded into the fibres. However, freezing the stubborn substance is a handy hack that can help make it much easier to get rid of.

Simply apply some ice to the mark on your carpet to stand a better chance of being able to eradicate it.

Minimise wear and tear

Obviously, it’s impossible to prevent all types of wear and tear in a household with little ones present but there are some preventative measures you can take to minimise it happening.

Try putting a mat near the front and back doors of your home to catch loose mud and wet marks from being outside. You could also put mats or protective layers down where the kids typically like to play and eat to reduce the chance of anything dropping on the carpet.

For high traffic areas in the home, like the hallway, use runners and rugs to protect your carpet at all costs. You could also consider setting ‘no food’ or ‘no shoes’ zones for your children to reinforce understanding where they can and can’t do certain things.

Apply baking soda before vacuuming

Believe it or not, baking soda does a fantastic job of eradicating funny smells because of its odour-eating properties. Apply some to your carpet before getting the vacuum cleaner ready to kill off any unpleasant odours hibernating amongst the fibres.

If all else fails, get new carpets from Frank’s!

Sometimes a carpet just reaches the end of its lifespan and it’s time for a new one.

At Frank’s, we don’t recommend the deep cleaning of carpets because the fibres aren’t designed to withstand the harsh chemicals used during the process.

The chemicals also attract new dirt and smells quicker than before, so in making the decision to have your carpet professionally cleaned you are probably making things worse than they were before!

As you probably already know, we love carpets. So much so that we have over 40,000 rolls of the stuff for you to choose from. No matter what your budget, we guarantee to have a carpet that is suitable for your home.
