How to measure a room for flooring

Let’s make a start! Begin by drawing a floor plan of the room you need measurements for, ensuring you note down any doorways, windows and things like fireplaces, fitted cupboards and alcoves.

But for now, only record actual measurements because extra allowances can be added later.

Using your tape measure, measure the width of the widest part of the room. Then, at a few different points, measure across the room because walls may be a little uneven, especially in older properties. Note down these measurements onto your plan.

If you can ask someone to help you hold the tape measure straight, this will make things much easier. Guaranteed!

Don’t forget to make sure you measure all the way into any doorway and also measure the widths of doorways, ensuring that you record all these measurements on your plan. Measure drop backs, as well as split levels or steps and jot these down too.

Once you have recorded all the essential measurements, take your plan into your local Frank’s and allow our helpful team of flooring experts to find the perfect flooring and give you an accurate quote.

Things to consider when measuring a room for flooring

To make sure the quote we give you is as accurate as possible, it is helpful for us to know as much information as possible about the rooms of several rooms you are measuring.

No matter what type of flooring you wish to install in your home, bring us a picture in-store of the room as well as your measurements so we can really see what we’re working with.

We might ask you what type of room it is and how you use it, so we can determine what type of flooring is most suitable. Then it’s also good to know about the sizes and lengths of windows and doors in the room and where they are located.

Other things we might need to know is if there is any built-in furniture in the room to work around and what is under the floor you are replacing. After all, the condition of the subfloor can affect the performance of new flooring.

So, pop down to your local Frank’s and we’ll be happy to help you find the perfect flooring for your home.
