At Frank’s, we know all the different ways to place rugs in your home, from the dining room to the bedroom and everywhere in between.

With rugs available from small to large at Frank’s, with textures and colours galore, the opportunities to transform spaces with a rug are virtually endless.

Here is our guide to placing rugs in your home.

Rugs in the dining room

When it comes to placing a rug in the dining room, it is important to consider the experience of sitting at the dining table. Ideally, you will want to centre the rug underneath the table and ensure it is big enough to accommodate all of the chairs.

If you are unsure what size rug to purchase, pull out the chairs around your dining table and measure the space so you can tell whether your rug will fit perfectly underneath.

…in the living room

Placing a rug in the living room can be a little tricker but it all depends on the size of the space you have and the furniture in it.

For smaller living rooms, choose a smaller rug to float in the room in between your furniture but still underneath your coffee table centrepiece. On the other hand, if you want to make the space feel bigger we recommend choosing a rug that fits all furniture to unify the space.

For mid-sized living rooms, always go with a larger rug and place your main pieces of furniture around it so that only the front legs lay on top of it.

For large living rooms a large rug is recommended to frame the space. Then, place all of your furniture on the rug completely while making sure there is still room around the outside for walking.

…and rugs in the bedroom

Choosing a rug for your bedroom largely depends on the size of the bed you have. If you have a queen bed, we recommend an 8’ by 10’ rug, while a king bed would look better paired with a 9’ by 12’ rug.

The most preferred way of placing rugs in a bedroom is to put it partially under the bed. Do this by pulling it under so it’s approximately halfway under the bed, with the bed centred on top. This will help to maximise rug space and provide a soft surface to step onto.

For smaller bedrooms, try placing a rug in the middle of the room, or at the foot of the bed to help pull your decor together. If you don’t want to place a full area rug in the bedroom, consider runners on either side of the bed for a soft, comfy experience.

Remember the rugs can create an optical illusion! A rug that is too small can make your space look disconnected. So if in doubt, always go for the bigger rug to help unify your furniture and give the illusion of a bigger room.
